Turmeric
Turmeric, often referred to as the "Queen of Spices," belongs to the ginger family and is widely cultivated both as a culinary spice and for its medicinal properties. Originating from East India and the Middle East, turmeric has been used for thousands of years and is now one of the most popular spices globally. Although it is a domesticated plant, India remains one of the largest producers of turmeric.
In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been utilized to treat a wide range of internal conditions, including indigestion, throat infections, colds, and liver ailments. It is also applied topically to cleanse wounds and treat skin sores. Turmeric is an excellent source of fiber, Vitamin B6, potassium, and also contains healthy amounts of Vitamin C and magnesium.
Turmeric comes from the dried root of the Curcuma longa plant. It has a tough brown skin and bright orange flesh and is a key ingredient in curry powder. Indian turmeric is highly valued in the global market due to its high curcumin content, making it the best in the world. India produces about 80% of the world's turmeric and accounts for 60% of global exports.
